To Tan or Not to Tan – That is the Question. 

Each summer, I make sure to discuss sun safety with my clients. Although sunlight has its benefits, excessive exposure does harm our skin. When it comes to tanning, I always make it clear that I do not endorse it. So, before we begin, I must set the record straight. Tanning is never a good idea. It is actually really harmful to your skin, and there’s no way to do it safely or healthily. Your skin cells can suffer damage from tanning, so it’s best to steer clear of it altogether. However, if you insist on tanning, I can provide some tips to make it safer. 

Tanning: Understanding the Risks and the Importance of Protection    

When exposed to UV radiation, our skin produces melanin to protect itself from further damage. However, some skin tones, like very pale skin, do not have enough melanin, and instead of tanning, they burn, which can increase the risk of skin cancer. 

It’s important to note that evidence suggests that tanning, regardless of skin tone, dramatically increases the risk of developing skin cancer. To avoid this, seek shade or avoid the sun during peak hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Gradual exposure to the sun -always outside the peak hours- might be the least harmful way to achieve a nice tan. Start with 20 minutes in the sun at a time to prevent sunburns.

The Dangers of Conventional Tanning Oils    

The primary ingredient in most tanning oils on the market is cheap carrot macerate mixed with mineral oil. However, mineral oil is derived from petroleum and is known to be a carcinogen. Moreover, it blocks the skin’s pores, leading to skin issues like pimples, blemishes, and blackheads. Some familiar names under which mineral oil can be found in the ingredients list are paraffin oil, baby oil, paraffin wax, and liquid paraffin. These conventional tanning oils can also contain harmful ingredients such as BHT, parabens, and hydroxymethyl glycinate. BHT is a synthetic antioxidant linked to cancer in some studies. Parabens, a group of preservatives, have been linked to breast cancer. Hydroxymethyl glycinate, a preservative that releases formaldehyde over time, can cause skin irritation and is a known carcinogen. Awareness of these ingredients and their potential health risks is essential.  

Picking the Right Tanning Oil  

If you insist on tanning, choose a natural oil and take the necessary precautions to prevent skin damage and overexposure to the sun:

  1. Look for oils that naturally offer a low protective effect (like AromaSense SunKissed oil blend).
